(Editor’s Note: Shasta County has a population of 182,155 and is 3,786 square miles with 72 square miles of water and borders six counties: Lassen, Modoc, Plumas, Siskiyou, Tehama and Trinity. It was one of the original counties in California created in 1850 but became one of the state’s 15 charter counties in 2024 delayed until 2025 because of a paper filing error. Shasta County is the epicenter of the Jefferson State movement that seeks to unite Northern California with southern Oregon. The county was Democratic until 1980 and since then has become one of the most Republican areas of California, especially in Presidential and Congressional elections, and is represented by State Senator Megan Dahle (R-1) and by State Assemblywoman Heather Hadwick (R-1). The former seat of California Congressional District 1 is vacant after the death of Congressman Doug LaMalfa, who had the seat since 2013 with voters deciding on the seat in the 2026 Primary. Shasta County has three cities: Redding, Chico and Yuba City with more than 70,000 residents. The county seat is Redding.)

(Editor’s Note: California Democratic Assemblyman Damon Connolly was first elected in 2022 to the 12th Assembly District. Previously, he served in the Marin County Board of Supervisors District 1 from 2015 to 2022 and on the San Rafael City Council from 2007 to 2014. Connolly served as a deputy attorney general from 1993 to 2007.

(Editor’s Note: Vermont’s 58-year-old Democratic Congresswoman Becca Balint has been in office since 2022 and was the first woman to be elected to Congress in the state. Prior to her election, Vermont was the only state never to have sent a woman to Congress. Balint calls herself a Progressive Democrat and served in the Vermont Senate from 2014 to 2022, where she was the first openly lesbian legislator. She was Majority Leader of the Vermont Senate from 2016 to 2020. Balint grew up in a Holocaust family and taught middle school history and also became a community college instructor. Vermont only has one at-large Congressional member.)
