(Editor’s Note: Sierra County has a population of 3,236, is 953 square miles and lies in the Sierra Nevada between Sacramento and the Nevada border. It is a strong Republican county and Downieville is the county seat and the county’s only incorporated city is Loyalton. The only traffic light in the county is a flashing red light at the intersection of highways 49 and 89 in Sierraville.)

Meeks, an African-American attorney, previously served in the New York State Assembly from 1993 to 1997. New York’s 50-year-old Democratic Congresswoman Grace Meng, Queens, has been in office since 2012 and is the first Asian American to be elected to the U.S. Congress from New York. Meng chairs the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus. She is an attorney, pro-choice and was a strong supporter of President Joe Biden. The New York Congressional delegation consists of 19 Democrats and 7 Republicans.)
